Rockland County Earns Fitch's Highest Bond Rating, Reflecting Strong Fiscal Health

Rockland County has received the highest possible bond rating, "AAA", from Fitch Ratings, marking a significant financial milestone that underscores the county's fiscal strength and long-term economic stability.

Bond ratings evaluate the creditworthiness of government entities and help determine the interest rates they pay when financing public projects. An AAA rating signals the lowest level of credit risk, allowing municipalities to borrow at more favorable interest rates and potentially reduce financing costs for future capital improvements.

According to Fitch, the upgrade reflects Rockland County's improved financial performance, strengthened unrestricted reserves, disciplined budget management, and positive demographic and economic trends. The agency noted that the county's reserves reached approximately 50% of fiscal year 2024 spending, with unaudited results indicating further improvement in 2025.

For the real estate community, strong municipal finances can help support long-term economic growth and investment. Lower borrowing costs may allow local governments to finance infrastructure improvements, public facilities, transportation projects, and other capital investments more efficiently. These types of public investments often contribute to the overall attractiveness and competitiveness of a community for residents, businesses, and developers.

While a bond rating does not directly affect home prices or mortgage rates, it serves as an important indicator of a county's financial health and its ability to responsibly manage public resources. Investors, commercial developers, and businesses often view strong municipal credit ratings as a sign of a stable operating environment.

Rockland County officials credited years of disciplined budgeting and conservative financial management for the upgrade. The Fitch recognition follows another notable achievement in 2025, when Rockland became the only county in New York to receive Moody's highest "Aaa" credit rating, further reinforcing its reputation for fiscal responsibility.

As communities throughout the Hudson Gateway region continue to invest in housing, infrastructure, and economic development, maintaining strong financial fundamentals remains an important component of supporting sustainable growth. Rockland County's latest rating upgrade reflects the role sound fiscal management can play in positioning local governments for future investment and opportunity.
