Harmony Hall Opens in New Paltz, Adding 51 Affordable Senior Housing Units
NEW PALTZ, N.Y. — A new affordable housing development for older adults has officially opened in Ulster County, adding 51 apartments for seniors and contributing to efforts to expand housing options across the Hudson Valley.
State and local officials recently celebrated the completion of Harmony Hall, a $20 million affordable housing community located in the Village of New Paltz. The development provides housing for residents age 62 and older, with apartments affordable to households earning up to 60 percent of the Area Median Income.
The project was developed by RUPCO, Inc., a Hudson Valley-based nonprofit organization focused on affordable housing and community development. Harmony Hall includes a mix of one- and two-bedroom apartments designed to help older adults remain in their communities while accessing safe, affordable housing.
The development incorporates a variety of accessibility features and energy-efficient design elements, including rooftop solar panels, water conservation measures, and high-efficiency building systems. Several apartments are fully accessible for residents with mobility needs, while others include accommodations for individuals with hearing or vision impairments.
Governor Kathy Hochul highlighted the importance of expanding affordable housing opportunities for New Yorkers, particularly seniors who are increasingly challenged by rising housing costs and limited inventory.
The opening of Harmony Hall comes as communities throughout the Hudson Valley continue to face housing shortages across multiple price points. Housing advocates and local leaders have emphasized the need for additional housing options for seniors, many of whom seek to downsize while remaining close to family, services, and community connections.
Located near downtown New Paltz, the development offers residents access to shopping, healthcare services, public transportation, and community amenities. The walkable location supports aging in place while reducing transportation barriers for older adults.
Funding for the project was provided through a combination of federal, state, county, and local resources, reflecting a collaborative effort to address housing affordability challenges in the region.
As housing affordability remains a priority across New York State, developments such as Harmony Hall represent one approach to increasing housing supply while meeting the needs of specific populations. The addition of 51 affordable senior housing units contributes to broader efforts to create more housing opportunities throughout the Hudson Valley and support residents at every stage of life.
